From chaos, comes order

Before there was neat, orderly and luxurious Shaker Heights, there was this: the Shaker Family buildings at what was called The Valley of God's Pleasure. Does this look like God's idea of pleasure? This image is along what is now Lee Road, so named for Mother Ann Lee, founder of the United Society of Believers in Christ’s Second Appearing (or, in the vernacular, Shaker) religion.

By the early 1930s, development was well along. This is the intersection of Shaker Boulevard and Moreland Boulevard (now Van Aken Boulevard). The large aprtments are the Moreland Courts, which are still tres chic (and tres pricey, too). If I recall correctly, step-mother number one camped out in these for a while waiting for my mother (wife No. 2) and I to vacate the house on South Woodland. We were happy to leave; and I know that the neighbors cringed when Betty moved in.
